What types are available?
Types of domain name extensions
There were originally seven non country specific domain names.
- .com
- .edu (restricted)
- .gov (restricted)
- .int (restricted)
- .mil (restricted)
- .net
- .org
.com and .org had no restrictions on usage but the others did i.e. .gov were for government pages only, .edu for educational organisations such as schools and universities. Later more were added, some with restrictions and some without.

- .coop (restricted)
- .museum (restricted)
Country specific top level domains are numerous and examples are .co.uk for the United Kingdom and .fr for France. There are also .eu and .me.uk which are nice options too.
