Question by Mr X

I look at the competition though and don't see much difference. Between keywords etc. I am a PR4 and one of them that ranks high is a pr4 as well but has more back links. Do I need more back links?

Hell www.srracing.com  is a PR3...

Hello again,

" www.srracing.com  is a PR3..."

PR is only indicative. There is some debate about what weight Google actually gives to the public PR. Don't focus too much on just one aspect. SR Racing have a superb site in terms of usability and SEO. A great example of a relatively simple site. A lot of time and effort has been put into it.

Yes, back links are the corner stone for Google. Don't be tempted into any 'link farms' or link schemes aimed at fooling Google, you will just get penalised. One way incoming links from a relevant site are the best types of links.

There is lots of talk about how to get links etc on the web but in the long run, if you provide great content, people will link to you naturally. You can encourage this with RSS feeds, bookmark this site links etc. But it all comes down to content.

You could offer an affiliate scheme, in effect paying commission on sales from other sites, increasing your back link counts.

"Let me think on all this, what do you think of running a PPC ads for some keywords?"

PPC definitely works to a certain extent and there are business models built entirely around PPC traffic. Be very wary of PPC though as click-fraud is a serious issue.

If you are very careful to find targeted keywords and monitor your responses, PPC can be very rewarding. Google even offer a free tracking service 'Google Urchin' so you can see which sales were generated by which originating search phrase. However, these stats are variable in their accuracy and can't be relied upon entirely. However they are more than accurate enough to indicate strongly performing keywords.

Please also remember that this is not a game with fixed rules. You are ultimately dealing with humans. You can increase your traffic by trying to 'fool' google with increased backlinks and both offline and online SEO, but your site needs to sell to a human being. Remember the question, do you want a 100 visitors and 20 sales or a 1000 visitors and 10 sales? Who are your visitors and what other sites do they use? If they are non competing, write an article for the website for free in return for a link to your website. You Tube may well have 300million visitors or so, but it does not generate a single penny in revenue.

"Thanks for the email and I will get back with you."

I look forward to hearing from you,

Paul.
