What is a 'good' domain name?
A good domain name does all of the following things.
- It is easy to remember
- It tells the visitor what you do
- It is easily spelt
- It represents your business or organisation
- It is honest and ethical
- It looks as good on paper as it does on the web
- It is as short as possible
- It uses at least one of your target keywords
Using ours as an example:
www.independentwebadvice.co.uk
Is it easy to remember? I thought it was but some people seem to not be able to easily recall it.
Is it easily spelt? Again I thought it was but lots of people find the spelling of 'independent' troublesome. The answer to this is not as easy as it could have been!
Does it represent my business? I think the answer to that is also yes.
Is it honest and ethical? Again, I would say yes. I am an independent web advisor that gives independent advice to customers. It doesn't make any claims that are untrue. Yes it is honest and ethical.
Does it work on paper too? Again I think yes, it does work on paper too, although it is a bit long when written down.
Is it as short as possible? The original name for my business was Websolve but that domain was not available. Independent Web Advice is really a bit on the long side. With three words it can be easily misremembered or misspelt. I hold my hands up with this one, I couldn't find a shorter domain name that fulfilled all the other criteria and that was available.
Does it use target keywords?Yes, 'web', 'independent' and 'advice' are all in my target keyword list.
Overall: Quite good - perhaps 7/10
If you think that is not very good, I wish you the best of luck finding your own. It really can be a tough task.
Finally - get a set!
I also own www.independentwebadvice.com which means I have both the .co.uk and the .com domains. This is a powerful combination and when buying your own domain, try to get the two domains if possible. Otherwise you will have a competitor scooping up your customers that use the wrong extension. Sometimes this can work in your favour, providing free traffic for your site. However it will usually work against you. Always check out the other domain extensions as you may find they are unsavoury websites you wouldn't want your customers to stray accross.
