How can you find out what Google thinks of your web site? What information about your web site will Google be happy to tell you about?

Is your web site indexed?

First you should check if your web site is indexed or not. Does your web site actually appear on Google or not?  You can check if your web site is indexed or not by searching for  'http://www.yourwebsite.co.uk' in the Google search box. If google reports that your web site returns 0 results then you are either in the sandbox (ie a new web site) or are being heavily penalized by Google as a spamming web site – tut, tut, what naughty black hat tricks have you been using?

How many pages does your web site have indexed?

You may have a web site with 2000 web pages – but if Google hasn’t indexed them then they won’t appear on the search engines. You can find out how many pages Google has indexed for you by using 'site:www.yourwebsitename.co.uk' in the Google search box.

How many links does Google report as pointing to your web site?

You may have a thousand links on the web to your own web site. But how many is Google recognizing? Find out how many web sites link to yours by using 'links:www.site.com' in the Google search box.

What is the Page Rank of your web site home page?

Every page in your web site is given a page rank by Google. There are many ways of doing this. One way is to get the Google toolbar and visit the web site to see its PR. Another way is to use one of the many web sites on the Internet that enables us to find the PR of any web site.

Track your web site for a complete picture

If you track these numbers on a regular basis you will begin to build up a great picture of where your web site is going. Is your web site getting better and better ratings? Or is your website stagnant? The worst thing of course is to find out if your web site is going downhill – if it is, find out why before all your traffic disappears.
