1) Let your site be searched for!

If you want to attract lots of visitors to your site then make sure it can be indexed properly on search engines.

2) Trust me, I’m a stranger!

Be careful about what you say concerning safety issues on your website. You do not need to say anything negative about harmful computer nasties or the dangers of internet usage. An honest site with genuine content does not need to ask it’s users to trust it.

3) Turn information into messages

You must communicate what your site is about immediately. A site can look attractive, have lots of great content and interactive features, but if your visitors don’t know about it, or why it can help them, they won’t use it or read it. You need to lead visitors to your information and communicate it’s usefulness to them. Remember to ask yourself, ‘is this relevant?’

4) The good, the bad and the ugly – Colour use

Good use of colour is using shades compliment each other with good contrast. Bad use of colour is mixing colours that are too similar in tone or clashing vivid colours together with poor contrast. Limit the number of colours to avoid a colour frenzy which will chase your visitors away.

5) Minimal is often best

Minimalism is a design style worth pursuing. Like any design style it needs a logical and clear navigation that guides the visitor through the web site on a planned journey. It doesn’t mean plain and boring, it means simple and clear, without any unnecessary clutter. With simple colours, a typographic header and a few shades of white can create a great minimalist design.
